219 Ventilators Defunct in J&K’s Government Medical Colleges, SKIMS: Minister

Jammu, Feb 18: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Thursday informed the Legislative Assembly that 219 ventilators are currently defunct across 10 Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) and the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in the Union Territory.

In a written reply to a starred question raised by MLA Shamim Firdous, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Itoo provided institution-wise details of functional and non-functional ventilators in GMCs, their associated hospitals and other major health institutions, including SKIMS.

As per the official data tabled in the House, out of a total of 877 ventilators installed across these institutions, 658 are functional while 219 are non-functional.

At Government Medical College Jammu and its associated hospitals, 320 ventilators are installed, of which 209 are functional and 111 are defunct.

Government Medical College Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital has 76 ventilators, with 68 functional and eight non-functional, while its other associated hospitals have 173 ventilators, including 44 that are not working.

At Government Medical College Anantnag and its associated hospitals, only 10 ventilators are functional against 26 defunct ones out of a total of 36.

Government Medical College Baramulla reported two non-functional ventilators out of 41, while Government Medical College Doda has 10 defunct ventilators out of 27 installed.

Similarly, Government Medical College Kathua reported two non-functional ventilators out of 52, Government Medical College Rajouri three out of 54, while Government Medical College Udhampur reported all 39 ventilators as functional. Government Medical College Handwara also reported all six ventilators to be in working condition.

At SKIMS Soura, 13 out of 53 ventilators were reported to be non-functional, according to the data presented in the House.
