Mahakumbh Nagar (UP), Jan 29: At least 30 people lost their lives and 60 others sustained injuries in a devastating stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in the early hours of Wednesday, officials confirmed.
The tragedy unfolded at the Sangam area as millions of pilgrims surged forward to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days of the mela.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Vaibhav Krishna, addressing a press conference in the evening, said the stampede erupted between 1-2 am when the overwhelming crowd broke through barricades, trampling those waiting on the other side.
“The pressure of the crowd led to the collapse of barricades, causing chaos. More than 90 people were rushed to the hospital, out of whom 30 succumbed to their injuries,” Krishna said.
Authorities have identified 25 of the deceased. Among the injured, 36 remain hospitalized while others have been discharged and sent home with their families.
