Sonamarg (J&K), Jan 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-awaited Sonamarg Tunnel on Monday, a landmark infrastructure project ensuring all-weather connectivity to the picturesque Sonamarg region. The 6.5-km tunnel, constructed at an altitude of 8,650 feet with an investment of ₹2,700 crore, bypasses avalanche-prone zones, revolutionizing access to Jammu and Kashmir while enhancing strategic connectivity to Ladakh.
Addressing a large gathering, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the transformative impact of the project on the region’s connectivity and tourism. He highlighted the potential of improved infrastructure to open new avenues for economic growth and social progress.
“Improved connectivity will open doors for tourists to explore lesser-known regions of Jammu and Kashmir,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the tunnel would foster tourism and support local livelihoods, making Sonamarg a year-round destination.
A Tribute to Resilience and Hard Work
Acknowledging the contributions of the laborers who braved harsh conditions to bring the project to life, Modi expressed heartfelt gratitude. “Despite the challenges, our resolve did not waver,” he remarked, lauding their dedication and honoring the memory of seven workers who lost their lives during the construction.
The Prime Minister also fondly recalled his frequent visits to the region during his earlier days, sharing his personal connection to areas like Sonamarg, Gulmarg, and Ganderbal.
A Vision of Growth and Prosperity
In his address, Modi outlined the broader vision for Jammu and Kashmir’s development, emphasizing the region’s centrality to India’s growth story.
- Transforming Infrastructure: He highlighted key projects like the Zojila Tunnel, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link, and the Chenab Bridge, describing Jammu and Kashmir as a burgeoning hub of tunnels, high bridges, and ropeways.
- Boosting Tourism: Modi noted that over 2 crore tourists visited the region in 2024, with Sonamarg seeing a sixfold increase in visitors over the past decade.
- Empowering Youth: He detailed initiatives to create jobs and enhance education, such as new IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, and polytechnic colleges, alongside the PM Vishwakarma scheme supporting local artisans.
“Jammu and Kashmir of the 21st century is scripting a new chapter of development,” Modi declared, emphasizing the region’s resurgence as a global tourist destination.

Modi lauded the peaceful progress made in Jammu and Kashmir, crediting the resilience of its people for strengthening democracy and fostering unity. He also highlighted the cultural revival in the region, with events like international marathons, winter sports, and cricket leagues gaining momentum.
Reflecting on the aspirations of the youth, Modi assured unwavering support in turning their dreams into reality. “The dream of a developed India will be realized when its crown, Kashmir, is adorned with the jewels of progress,” he remarked, envisioning a prosperous and beautiful future for the region.
About the Sonamarg Tunnel
The Sonamarg Tunnel includes a main 6.4-km stretch, a parallel emergency passage, and approach roads, providing year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg en route to Leh. The project complements the under-construction Zojila Tunnel, which, upon completion, will significantly enhance the strategic link between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh.
The inauguration marks a milestone in Jammu and Kashmir’s transformation, reinforcing its identity as “Paradise on Earth.” The tunnel is expected to spur economic growth, enhance defense logistics, and further integrate the region with the rest of the country.
