Ramzan Begins in J&K Amid Devotion, Markets Abuzz with Festive Shopping

Srinagar, Mar 2: The sacred month of Ramzan commenced in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, with lakhs of devout Muslims rising before dawn for ‘Sehri’ after mosques, shrines, and traditional drum beaters announced the start of fasting.

Throughout the month, the faithful will observe fasts from dawn to dusk, engaging in prayer, charity, and acts of compassion. Mosques and shrines across the Valley have become centers of religious fervor, with preachers delivering sermons on piety, kindness, and communal harmony.

Markets saw an overwhelming rush on Saturday evening as people stocked up on essentials like dates, sherbets, raisins, and basil seeds, which hold a special place in Ramzan traditions. Roadside vendors and stalls mushroomed across Srinagar and other towns, offering a variety of products at prices ranging from ₹200 to ₹4,000 per kg, depending on quality.

Children, though not required to fast, eagerly observed the ritual for a day to emulate elders. Meanwhile, charitable institutions witnessed generous donations as Kashmiris upheld their long-standing tradition of supporting the underprivileged during the holy month.

Authorities have urged the public to be cautious while making charitable contributions, warning against fraudulent entities seeking to exploit the spirit of giving.
