Independent MLA Protests in J&K Assembly, Demands Justice for Kathua, Sopore Deaths

Jammu, Mar 3: Independent MLA Sheikh Khursheed Ahmed staged a protest inside the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly premises on Monday, demanding justice for the families of two civilians killed in Kathua and Sopore and calling for the restoration of statehood.

Braving the rain, Ahmed, who represents Langate constituency, sat in the Assembly premises holding a banner, demanding a judicial probe into the deaths of Waseem Mir and Makhan Din. He also attempted to enter the Central Hall during the Lieutenant Governor’s address on the opening day of the Budget session but was prevented by security personnel.

“I raised the demand for justice for Waseem Mir and Makhan Din. The police and government remain silent. Even legislators are not speaking. That is why I took this stand. We demand justice,” Ahmed told reporters outside the Assembly.

He emphasized the need for judicial investigations into both incidents and urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to order independent probes.

Mir was shot dead by security forces in Sopore on January 5 after allegedly failing to stop at a checkpoint. Din, allegedly tortured in police custody, consumed poison and died by suicide in Kathua on February 4.

Ahmed also reiterated demands for the restoration of statehood, release of political prisoners, an end to employee terminations, and a halt to the use of the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The protest took place as the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly convened for its Budget session after a seven-year hiatus. This marks the second session of the Assembly since the formation of the NC-led government in the Union Territory.
