After Katra Protests, HLC Engages Stakeholders on Vaishno Devi Ropeway Project

Katra, Mar 17: After fierce opposition and protests by Katra residents against the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’s (SMVDSB) proposed ropeway project from Katra to Bhawan, the High-Level Committee (HLC) has been holding a series of meetings with stakeholders in an effort to address concerns and navigate a resolution.

In its latest round of discussions, the committee, constituted by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (who also chairs the SMVDSB), met with representatives from various groups, including the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Constituency MLA, Reasi MLA, Chairman of the District Development Council (DDC) Reasi, Muskan Charitable Trust, and the Banganga-Charanpaduka Shops Association. The meeting, led by HLC chairman Dr. Ashok Bhan, also saw the participation of SMVDSB members Suresh Sharma, Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, and SMVDSB CEO Anshul Garg.

While the Shrine Board has projected the ropeway as a major infrastructural advancement for pilgrims, local residents and shopkeepers have voiced strong opposition, fearing a loss of livelihoods and the erosion of the traditional Banganga route, which holds deep religious and cultural significance.

During the meeting, stakeholders unanimously reiterated their support for development initiatives but stressed the need to safeguard local businesses and livelihoods. They called for a balanced approach that enhances facilities for pilgrims without compromising the town’s economic backbone or religious heritage. The demand for upgrading and maintaining the traditional Banganga track as an integral part of the pilgrimage experience was strongly emphasized.

The Shrine Board’s ongoing developmental works, including the Trikuta Hills Parikrama Marg project and priority darshan facilities for Katra residents and 41 villages in the subdivision, were acknowledged by the stakeholders. Muskan Charitable Trust, an NGO dedicated to differently-abled children, supported the ropeway project, citing its potential to provide seamless access to the shrine for divyang devotees.

Dr. Bhan, after the deliberations, stated that the meeting concluded on a constructive note, with assurances that all concerns will be thoroughly evaluated before any final decision is made. He reaffirmed the HLC’s commitment to continued engagement, ensuring that every stakeholder’s voice is heard.

The protests against the ropeway project have kept tensions high in Katra, and while discussions continue, the outcome of these deliberations will be crucial in determining the way forward for the controversial initiative.
