Landslide Damages Kishtwar-Paddar Road, 22 Families Evacuated, Vehicular Movement Suspended

Kishtwar, April 20: At least 22 families were shifted to safety, and vehicular movement was suspended on the Kishtwar-Paddar road stretch after a massive landslide damaged the area on Saturday, said officials.

The landslide occurred in the Pattharnaki area along the Kishtwar-Paddar road. Authorities swiftly evacuated the affected families, providing them with tents and food. A senior police officer confirmed the precautionary suspension of vehicular movement to avoid any potential tragedy.

“We have shifted 22 families to safety and provided them with necessary resources. The vehicular movement was suspended to ensure no one is at risk,” said the police officer.

The landslide reportedly damaged a stretch of nearly 200 metres of the road. The cause of the landslide has not been officially confirmed, though locals suspect that blasting activities related to the 624 MW Kiru Hydel Power Project may have triggered it.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Paddar, Sunil Sharma, called for an urgent and permanent solution to the issue. “I have requested the deputy commissioner to visit the site, and all concerned officials have been called in for an assessment and planning session,” Sharma said.

Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Shavan confirmed the inspection of the site and assured that restoration and repair work would begin promptly. “We have inspected the spot and have ordered the precautionary suspension of vehicular movement. The site is being assessed for restoration,” Shavan said.

Authorities have assured that necessary steps are being taken to restore the road and ensure the safety of the local residents.
