JAMMU, Apr 20: A government school teacher in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district has been arrested for allegedly seeking sexual favours from a minor student by threatening to fail her in internal examinations, police said on Sunday.
The accused, posted at Government Higher Secondary School Bhaderwah, was taken into custody after a complaint was registered on April 16, a police spokesperson said.
According to the complaint, the teacher allegedly sent inappropriate messages to the student, offering to secure her admission in a medical college in Punjab in exchange for sexual favours. He also claimed to have made similar arrangements for other girls in the past and warned the student against disclosing the matter, threatening that she would otherwise fail her exams.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered under Sections 74 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 75 (sexual harassment), and 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, at the Bhaderwah Police Station.
Police confirmed that the teacher is in custody and further investigation is underway.
