Jammu, July 21: A tragic incident struck the quiet village of Banch in Poonch on Monday when a massive rock dislodged from a nearby mountain and crashed into the Government Primary School Kalissan, killing a 5-year-old student and leaving several others injured.
According to Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Poonch, Dr. P.A. Khan, the sudden rockfall occurred during school hours, catching students and staff completely off guard. “One student was killed and several others sustained injuries. All the injured children were rushed to District Hospital Poonch for treatment,” he confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as Ehsan Ali (5), son of Mohd Razaq, a resident of Kalsan Bhainch. The impact of the rock caused a partial collapse of the school structure, sparking panic and chaos among students and staff.
Four of the injured have been identified as:
– Mohd Safeer (7), son of Mohd Shareef
– Bilal Farooq (8), son of Farooq Ahmed
– Aftab Ahmed (6), son of Idress Ahmed
– Tobia Kouser (7), daughter of Basharat Hussain
All are residents of Bhainch village.
Eyewitnesses said the rock came hurtling down with force, leaving little time to react. “It was like thunder, and within seconds the school wall had crumbled,” said a villager who rushed to help in the aftermath.
Local authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident, and questions are being raised over the safety of educational institutions located in landslide-prone zones. The district administration is expected to assess the structural integrity of other such schools in the region.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with grieving parents and frightened children left to grapple with the horror of what was meant to be just another school day.
