Vaishno Devi Yatra remains suspended for 21st day after fatal landslide

JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 15: The pilgrimage to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi cave shrine in Trikuta hills remained suspended from the base camp Katra for the 21st consecutive day on Monday, following the August 26 landslide that claimed 34 lives, mostly pilgrims, near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkuwari.

“The commencement of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra, scheduled from yesterday, stands postponed till further orders. Devotees are requested to stay updated through official communication channels,” an official of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) said.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who is also chairman of the Shrine Board, has constituted a three-member committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary (Jal Shakti) Shaleen Kabra, with Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar and IGP Jammu B S Tuti as members, to investigate the causes of the tragedy. The panel will submit a comprehensive report to the LG.

Meanwhile, ahead of the upcoming Navratras beginning September 22, SMVDSB CEO Sachin Kumar Vaishya chaired a joint meeting at the Spiritual Growth Centre, Katra. He directed officials to ensure synergy among stakeholders and take measures for smooth conduct of the pilgrimage during the festival, when a large influx of devotees is expected.

The yatra will remain suspended until further clearance is given by authorities.
