Heavy Rains, Snowfall Likely in J&K From Oct 5–7: MET Issues Weather Advisory

Srinagar, Oct 2: The Meteorological Department on Thursday issued a weather advisory, warning of a significant Western Disturbance that is set to affect Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas from October 4, 2025.

According to the advisory communicated to the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and other authorities, widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall over higher reaches is expected between October 5 and 7, with peak activity forecast from the night of October 5 till the morning of October 7.

The department cautioned that moderate to heavy snowfall is likely over higher-altitude regions including Anantnag–Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg–Zojila, Bandipora–Razdan Pass, Gulmarg, and Kupwara–Sadhna Pass. Light snow may also occur in the middle reaches.

In the plains of Kashmir, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected, while parts of Jammu division could witness heavy to very heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds of 40–50 km/h, gusting up to 60–70 km/h.

Authorities have warned of possible disruption in surface transport, particularly along the Jammu–Srinagar and Srinagar–Leh National Highways, besides other hilly and mountainous routes. The advisory also highlights the risk of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in slope-prone areas.

Farmers have been advised to suspend agricultural operations during October 5–7 to avoid crop damage. Rising water levels in rivers and streams, as well as waterlogging in low-lying areas, are also anticipated.

“The advisory has been issued for public awareness and precautionary measures,” an official said, urging residents and travelers to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines.
