Move aimed at easing traffic congestion and ensuring road safety; colour-coded system introduced for e-vehicles
JAMMU, Oct 11: In a bid to streamline traffic and enhance road safety in the winter capital, the Jammu district administration on Saturday announced the regulation of electric vehicles (EVs) within specific zones for an initial period of three months, starting October 23.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the District Road Traffic Authority (DRTA), chaired by Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas, and attended by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Joginder Singh, SSP Traffic Farooq Qaiser, Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Jammu Jasmeet Singh, and representatives from various transport unions.
“All the decisions were taken in consultation with different stakeholders amicably,” an official said, adding that the move aims to regulate the movement of e-rickshaws, e-autos, and e-carts across the city. The regulation seeks to promote disciplined driving and ease traffic congestion, particularly in busy market and residential areas.
As per the new system, e-vehicles will be allowed to operate only within designated zones and must display colour-coded plates for easy identification:
- Zone 1 (South Jammu): Pink plate
- Zone 2 (North Jammu): Blue plate
- Zone 3 (Akhnoor): Yellow plate
- Zone 4 (RS Pura): Red plate
- Zone 5 (Marh): Green plate
- Zone 6 (Nagrota): Black plate
Movement of e-vehicles between zones will be restricted, except at seven designated crossings, which include:
- Amphalla Hospital crossing towards District Jail
- Bakshi Nagar crossing towards Old Shakuntala Theatre
- KC Theatre (Backside) crossing towards Shalamar Children Hospital
- Hotel Asia crossing towards District Police Lines
- Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground crossing towards Shiksha Niketan School
- Marble Market crossing towards Greater Kailash
- Kunjwani crossing towards Greater Jammu
Additionally, e-vehicles will not be allowed on flyovers, national highways, or state highways within district limits. Vehicles registered outside Jammu district will also be barred from operating within its jurisdiction.
DC Minhas said the initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure safe, efficient, and eco-friendly traffic management. “The cooperation of all operators and stakeholders is essential to make this system successful,” he emphasized.
The administration will review the order after three months, based on compliance levels and public feedback, to decide on further modifications or extensions.
With the growing number of electric vehicles in the city, officials said the new zonal system will help decongest main roads, reduce violations, and create a more organized transport framework for sustainable urban mobility in Jammu.
