JAMMU, Apr 9: A police team came under a violent attack during an anti-bovine smuggling operation in the Miran Sahib area of RS Pura sector on Thursday evening, leaving one policeman injured, officials said.
According to police sources, a team from Police Station Miran Sahib had launched an operation near Muralia Dak Bungalow following specific inputs about an attempt to smuggle bovines.
Upon reaching the spot, the police party noticed suspicious activity linked to smuggling. However, during the कार्रवाई, a group of individuals present at the site turned hostile and began heavy stone pelting on the police personnel in an attempt to thwart the operation and facilitate the escape of the smugglers.
The situation escalated rapidly as the police team was surrounded by the miscreants. During the attack, a police driver sustained injuries due to stone pelting and was shifted to a medical facility for treatment.
Officials said that amid the confrontation, some members of the group allegedly opened fire on the police party. In response, police fired a few controlled rounds in self-defence to disperse the attackers and ensure their safety. No injuries were reported from the exchange of fire.
Reinforcements were immediately rushed from Police Station Miran Sahib, following which the situation was brought under control and the trapped personnel were safely evacuated.
During the operation, police successfully seized the vehicle being used for bovine smuggling. However, the driver managed to escape taking advantage of the chaos. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack as well as the smuggling attempt.
The situation in the area was later brought under control and normalcy restored. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway. Police have said that strict action will be taken against all those found involved in the incident.
