Jammu, Sept 17: Two terrorists were killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in the Brattal area of Udhampur district on Thursday, while a massive search operation is still underway to ensure no other terrorists are hiding in the area.
Officials said the operation, codenamed “Operation Sohan,” was launched after security agencies received specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the dense forest area. Acting on the information, teams of the Army’s White Knight Corps, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF moved into the area during the intervening night of September 16 and 17.
Despite heavy rain, poor visibility and difficult terrain, the joint team established contact with the terrorists, triggering an exchange of fire. During the operation, two terrorists were killed.
Security officials said the operation is still in progress and searches are being carried out in the surrounding forests as a precautionary measure. Additional forces have been deployed to prevent any possible escape route and to sanitise the entire area.
The encounter is being seen as a significant success for security forces, who have intensified anti-terror operations across the hilly districts of the Jammu region in recent months. The Udhampur operation comes days after security agencies stepped up searches in adjoining areas following intelligence inputs about the movement of terrorists in the region.
Officials said the identities of the slain terrorists and details of weapons recovered from the encounter site will be shared after the operation is completed.
Meanwhile, security forces have maintained a tight vigil in the area, with drones and surveillance equipment being used to monitor movement in the dense forest belt. Authorities said the focus remains on eliminating any remaining threat and ensuring the area is fully secured.
