SRINAGAR, Jan 10: The Kashmir Valley continues to experience intense cold conditions, with minimum temperatures dipping several degrees below freezing, officials reported on Friday. The Meteorological (MeT) Office has forecasted mainly dry weather for the day, with a possibility of light rain or snow at isolated locations over the weekend.
Clear skies over the past few nights have intensified the cold wave, causing temperatures across the valley to plunge into sub-zero levels. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.3°C, slightly higher than the previous night’s minus 4.4°C.
Gulmarg, the popular ski resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 8.1°C, showing a marginal improvement from minus 9.6°C the previous night. Meanwhile, Pahalgam, a key base camp for the Amarnath Yatra, recorded the coldest temperature in the valley at minus 10°C.
Other areas in the valley also reported freezing temperatures. Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, registered a low of minus 7.6°C, while Konibal in Pampore town recorded minus 6.2°C. Kupwara, in north Kashmir, saw the mercury settle at minus 5.6°C, and Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded minus 5.7°C.
The MeT Office has predicted generally dry weather for Friday, with light snowfall expected in higher reaches starting Saturday. Officials pointed out that the valley has seen clear skies and bright sunshine during the day in recent days, contributing to significant temperature drops during the night.
