BUDGAM, Oct 6: Police in Budgam district, Jammu and Kashmir, have registered an FIR against the administrator of a Facebook page for allegedly spreading false information about a horse being slaughtered for meat, officials said on Monday.
The Facebook page, ‘Kashmir Speaks’, shared a video of a dead horse, claiming it was killed to sell its meat in the market. Police investigation revealed that the incident occurred on August 26 in Rakhai village of Khansahib Tehsil due to a dispute between two parties, and had no connection to meat sale.
A police spokesperson said,
“The Facebook page published false information alleging the horse was slaughtered to sell its meat at Arizal, creating unnecessary fear and panic among the public.”
The FIR has been registered under Section 353-2 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Khansahib Police Station, and an investigation has been initiated. Police urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information on social media, warning that misinformation can cause panic and unrest.
Authorities are examining the social media activity to ensure accountability while reminding users that deliberate circulation of false information can attract legal action. Police also emphasized the importance of fact-checking before sharing content, especially on sensitive issues that can impact public sentiment.
This move reflects the growing vigilance of law enforcement in monitoring misinformation in the digital space and taking prompt action against sources of misleading content.
