New Delhi, Jan 2: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked one of its own deputy superintendents of police (SPs), posted in the Bank Security and Frauds branch in Mumbai, for allegedly taking bribes from individuals being investigated by him, officials said on Thursday.
The FIR filed against Deputy SP BM Meena alleges that he was using middlemen to route bribe money through a network of accounts and hawala channels. The investigation suggests that Meena sought “undue advantage” from multiple individuals within the scope of his official inquiries.
The CBI, which follows a strict zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, emphasized that it takes immediate action against erring officers. “The message from Director Praveen Sood is clear: internal vigilance is essential for external action,” officials stated.
In line with this policy, the agency has taken firm action in recent months, dismissing three officers under Article 311 of the Constitution without inquiry and granting compulsory retirement to five others under the Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(J) of the Department of Personnel and Training service rules.
In Meena’s case, the CBI conducted searches across 20 locations in Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, and New Delhi, resulting in the seizure of Rs 55 lakh, which is believed to have been routed through a hawala channel. Additionally, property papers indicating investments of Rs 1.78 crore, book entries showing transactions worth Rs 1.63 crore, and other incriminating documents were confiscated.
In a separate case, the government recently “forfeited” the Union Home Minister’s medal for Excellence in Investigation awarded to CBI Inspector Rahul Raj in 2023, following his involvement in a bribery case. Raj, who was caught accepting a Rs 10 lakh bribe earlier this year, was dismissed from service.
