New Delhi, Sept 22: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Anil Chauhan on Monday emphasised the changing nature of modern warfare, driven by the convergence of kinetic and non-kinetic domains, and the need for advanced, integrated technological solutions.
Addressing the inaugural Tri-Services Academia Technology Symposium (T-SATS) at the Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantonment, Gen Chauhan called for greater collaboration between the armed forces, academia, start-ups, and industry to develop indigenous capabilities across platforms, weapons, networks, and doctrines to meet future operational requirements.
“The armed forces and academia must work together to scale innovation and make India a global leader in next-generation defence technologies,” the CDS said.
The symposium, themed “Vivek va Anusandhan se Vijay” (Victory through Wisdom and Research), aims to synergise the services-academia R&D ecosystem for the development of niche and futuristic technologies tailored for India’s armed forces. Directors and heads of departments from premier R&D institutions, along with students from 62 institutes including IISc, IITs, IIITs, and private technology institutes, participated in the event.
Gen Chauhan also inaugurated a technology exhibition showcasing 43 innovative projects from academia, which were evaluated by subject-matter experts from the three services for potential military applications. Projects demonstrating promise will be considered for R&D collaboration and future funding support.
A major highlight of the symposium was a series of 95 structured one-on-one meetings between academic innovators and service representatives, providing a platform to pitch proposals, receive strategic guidance, and explore military applications. These sessions are scheduled to continue on Tuesday.
During the event, MoUs were signed with several academic institutions, including Ajeenkya DY Patil University, Gujarat National Law University, IIT Madras, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Nirma University, Oriental Institute of Science and Technology, Rashtriya Raksha University, and the National Research Development Corporation.
The ministry said T-SATS represents a significant step in fostering deeper integration between India’s academic research capabilities and defence technology requirements, building a sustainable partnership to co-create future-ready solutions for national security.
