Deputy CM Calls for Global Promotion of Jammu and Kashmir’s Indigenous Handicrafts

Jammu, Jan 20: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary today emphasized the importance of promoting the indigenous handicrafts of Jammu and Kashmir on both national and international platforms.

“Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with a diverse range of indigenous handicrafts that have carved a niche in national and global markets. It is crucial to further promote these products through sustained marketing efforts. Expanding their market will not only boost the economy but also create new job opportunities,” the Deputy Chief Minister remarked.

Choudhary made these comments while inaugurating the Jammu and Kashmir Industries (JKI) Sale Mela, an event showcasing a wide array of wool and silk products.

The event, organized by JKI, saw the presence of key officials, including Smitha Sethi, Secretary of the Industries and Commerce Department, Arun Kumar Manhas, Director of Industries and Commerce Jammu, Vikram Gupta, Managing Director of Jammu and Kashmir Industries, Pawan Kumar Sharma, Managing Director of Jammu and Kashmir Minerals, along with other senior officers.

Appreciating JKI’s efforts in organizing the Sale Mela, the Deputy CM reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting local industries, noting that necessary measures are in place to facilitate industrial growth. “This Sale Mela reflects the exceptional talent of JKI workers and showcases the rich heritage of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Mulberry Silk. The government is dedicated to promoting local crafts, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for sheep wool rearers, sericulturists, and artisans, while expanding their market reach,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister further directed JKI to explore the possibility of organizing similar events at prominent locations within and outside Jammu and Kashmir to highlight the region’s rich heritage products.

The Sale Mela, which has already garnered a significant response from Civil Secretariat employees, will continue for the next 10 days, offering exclusive discounts and special promotions to encourage greater public participation.
