FIR Lodged Against Karnataka-Cadre IPS Officer in Noida for Dowry Harassment, Domestic Violence

Noida, Oct 18: A Karnataka-cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer has been booked along with six others on charges of dowry harassment, domestic violence, and criminal intimidation, following a detailed complaint filed by his wife, a Noida-based doctor, police said on Saturday.

According to officials, the complaint was filed by Dr. Kriti Singh, a resident of Sector 128, Noida, against her husband Shivanshu Rajput, a 2019-batch IPS officer currently posted in Bengaluru, and his family members, including his father, mother, brother, sister-in-law, and two friends. The FIR was registered at Sector 126 Police Station after preliminary verification of the complaint.

“The FIR has been registered under sections 85, 115(2), 352, 351(2), 3(5), and 316(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961,” said Bhupendra Kumar, Station In-charge of Sector 126 Police Station. “The matter is being investigated, and statements of the complainant and the accused will be recorded shortly.”

In her 41-page complaint filed on October 16, Dr. Singh narrated a series of incidents alleging physical assault, mental harassment, and repeated dowry demands made by her husband and in-laws since her marriage in December 2021. The wedding, she stated, was a grand affair held at a five-star hotel in Agra, where her family reportedly spent over ₹2 crore on arrangements, jewellery, and other expenses.

Despite this, she alleged, her in-laws continued to pressure her for more dowry in the form of luxury cars, cash, and expensive gifts. The complaint further accuses Rajput of maintaining extramarital relationships and threatening to abandon her when confronted about his alleged affairs.

Dr. Singh also claimed that she faced humiliation and abuse both at her matrimonial home and through phone calls, causing severe emotional distress. “He would often threaten to ruin my reputation and separate me from my child if I resisted his demands or questioned his conduct,” she stated in her complaint.

Police officials confirmed that evidence and supporting documents submitted by the complainant are being examined as part of the investigation. A medical examination and verification of the alleged incidents are also likely to be conducted.

The couple has a one-and-a-half-year-old son, currently staying with the complainant in Noida.

“The investigation is in its early stages. Necessary legal procedures will be followed, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” the Station House Officer added.

Officials said the IPS officer and his family members named in the FIR are likely to be called for questioning in the coming days.

This case has drawn attention in both police and civil circles, given that it involves a serving IPS officer accused of serious domestic offences under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
