Bhaderwah, Jan 10: The snow-covered landscapes along the Bhaderwah–Pathankot interstate highway have become a magnet for tourists over the past two weeks, drawing visitors eager to experience the region’s scenic beauty, fresh snowfall, and high-altitude adventure.
Despite sub-zero temperatures and harsh winter conditions, tourists are flocking to destinations like Guldanda, Panj Nallah, and Chattargalla, thanks to round-the-clock security provided by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the warm hospitality of local residents.
“Bhaderwah is naturally beautiful, and snowfall makes it even more attractive. But ensuring safety in these high-altitude areas during winter is challenging. We have deployed police teams across the region to provide security so that tourists can enjoy their visit without fear,” said SP Bhaderwah Vinod Sharma.
The strong police presence has been particularly reassuring in light of recent security concerns in nearby forests of Kishtwar, Kathua, and Udhampur districts. Officials say the highways and tourist spots remain safe, allowing visitors to enjoy snow play, trekking, and other winter activities with confidence.
Tourists visiting the area praised both the police and the locals. “We were initially worried about safety, but the arrangements here are excellent. From Guldanda to Chattargalla, we felt completely secure, and the locals made our visit memorable with their warmth,” said Vishal Sharma, a tourist from Maharashtra.
Satish Singh Jhadav, visiting from Gujarat, added, “The friendly attitude of the police and the presence of check posts at key points made our trip enjoyable. It’s rare to see snow in such a secure environment.”
Local tourism experts say the recent boom in visitors is the result of timely snowfall combined with the confidence inspired by police vigilance. “Earlier, only the Army maintained a presence at high altitudes during winter. This year, the J&K Police have done a remarkable job of keeping these destinations safe for tourists,” said Bhaderwah-based tourism strategist Rashid Choudhary.
The influx of visitors has also benefited local vendors, said Yasir Wani, President of the Guldanda Vendors Association. “Thousands of tourists have visited since the first snowfall, giving a much-needed boost to local businesses,” he said.
In response to growing tourist numbers, the Tourism Department and the Doda district administration have announced a two-day winter festival at Guldanda on January 17 and 18 to celebrate the season and promote Bhaderwah as a winter tourism hub.
With pristine landscapes, snowfall, strong security, and the support of locals, Bhaderwah is fast emerging as one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most sought-after winter destinations.
