SRINAGAR, Oct 6: Fresh snowfall in higher reaches and rain showers in the plains led to a sharp decline in temperatures across the Kashmir Valley on Monday, officials said.
Snowfall was reported from several high-altitude areas, including Sinthan Top in Anantnag, Affarwat in Gulmarg, Zojila Pass, Bangus in Kupwara, and Razdan Pass in Gurez Valley. These areas were blanketed in white, signaling an early onset of winter.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall occurred in the plains, including Srinagar city, further intensifying the cold wave. According to the Meteorological Department (MeT), the day temperature in Srinagar dipped to 11°C, a significant drop from 22.6°C recorded a day earlier. Other districts across the valley recorded similar declines.
The MeT forecast continued wet weather over the next 24 hours, with light snow in higher reaches and rainfall in plains expected to persist. Officials warned travelers to exercise caution while moving through mountain passes such as Zojila and Razdan, which may remain slippery due to snow and rain.
The fresh spell, while causing inconvenience in some areas, has been welcomed by tourists and locals in hill stations like Gulmarg, where the snowfall created scenic landscapes. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure minimal disruption to transportation and essential services.
Officials also advised the public to remain vigilant and follow weather advisories while traveling and commuting in rain-affected areas.
The early snowfall and rain serve as a reminder of Kashmir’s volatile weather in autumn, highlighting the importance of preparedness for winter conditions in higher altitude zones.
