Geetanjali Angmo Visits Sonam Wangchuk in Jodhpur Jail, Legal Team to Challenge NSA Order

JODHPUR, Oct 8: Geetanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, visited him at Jodhpur Central Jail on Tuesday, where he has been detained under the National Security Act (NSA) following the September 24 Leh violence, she said on X.

Accompanied by lawyer Ritam Khare, Angmo confirmed that Wangchuk’s legal team had obtained a copy of the detention order, which lists the allegations against him and will be challenged in court. The activist’s brother, Tsetan Dorje, had also visited him earlier with lawyer Mustafa Haji.

Haji said Wangchuk has demanded an independent judicial inquiry into the killing of four individuals during last month’s protest. He added that Wangchuk is willing to remain in custody until such an inquiry is conducted.

Angmo has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking her husband’s release, with a hearing scheduled for October 14. Wangchuk was detained following violent clashes during protests demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

After detention in Leh, he was initially taken to Delhi before being transferred to Jodhpur Jail on September 26. The case has drawn significant attention, with civil society groups and political leaders calling for a transparent probe into the incidents in Leh and due legal process for Wangchuk.
