Jammu, Aug 12: Heavy rains lashed several districts of the Jammu region, triggering flash floods, damaging structures, and disrupting road connectivity, officials said on Tuesday. Authorities in Rajouri, Reasi, and Poonch ordered the closure of all schools in view of adverse weather conditions.
Between 8:30 am Monday and 6:30 am Tuesday, Reasi recorded 280.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Kathua with 148 mm, and Samba and Jammu with 96 mm each, the Meteorological Department said. The downpour led to flash floods, landslides, and mudslides, though no casualties have been reported.
In Poonch’s Surankote area, part of a high school building was damaged after a flash flood swept away a 200-foot-long shed and a sports room, destroying records and equipment. A cowshed collapse in Rajouri’s Jaglanoo village caused loss of property and livestock.
Several key roads were blocked, including the Kotranka–Khawas road at Kanja, the Rajouri–Thanamandi–Surankote stretch between DKG and Bufliyaz, and the Ghambir Mughlan–Thanamandi road at multiple points. In Reasi, a landslide at Kandamorh in Pouni blocked traffic, while the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway witnessed waterlogging at Jagti.
The Chenab River in Reasi was flowing at a high level, washing away a crucial road patch at Gupt Kashi. Authorities have urged residents to stay away from water bodies.
The MeT department has forecast rain and thunderstorms across the Jammu division till August 15, with heavy showers likely at some places. A red warning has been issued for Udhampur, Reasi, Jammu, Samba, and Kathua, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds above 60 kmph, and heavy rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour.
