Srinagar, Jan 6: Jammu and Kashmir experienced heavy snowfall in the higher reaches, while moderate snow and rain affected the plains of the region on Monday.
Officials from the Meteorological (MeT) department reported that heavy snowfall was recorded in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and other higher reaches of the state over the past 24 hours.
A statement from the MeT office noted, “On January 6, generally cloudy weather with light to moderate rain in the plains of Jammu and snow at most places of J&K is expected, with an improvement anticipated by the afternoon. On January 7 and 10, dry weather is forecasted with generally cloudy conditions. Light snow is expected in isolated to scattered areas on January 11 and 12, followed by generally dry weather on January 13 and 15.”
The department also issued an advisory, cautioning against the risks posed by fresh snowfall, sub-freezing temperatures, and icy conditions on both roads in the plains and higher reaches. Tourists, travelers, and transporters have been urged to plan accordingly and heed administrative and traffic advisories.
The minimum temperatures recorded included:
- Srinagar: -0.5°C
- Gulmarg: -4.5°C
- Pahalgam: -1.4°C
- Jammu city: 9.3°C
- Katra: 9.2°C
- Batote: 2.8°C
- Banihal: 2.3°C
- Bhaderwah: 3.6°C
The region is currently experiencing its 40-day-long period of extreme winter cold, which began on December 21 and will conclude on January 30. During this period, all water bodies, including lakes, springs, ponds, streams, and wells, are partially frozen.
Health experts have advised the public to avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Hypothermia, along with respiratory infections, remains a significant risk, potentially leading to serious heart conditions.
Fresh snowfall has brought joy to tourists, especially those vacationing in Gulmarg and other hill stations. All hotels in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and most in Srinagar are fully booked during this peak season.
