India Extends Ban on Pakistani Aircraft Till Aug 23 Amid Heightened Border Tensions

New Delhi, July 22: India on Tuesday extended its ban on Pakistani aircraft entering Indian airspace until August 23, 2025, in response to ongoing regional tensions and reciprocal restrictions imposed by Pakistan.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol announced the decision on social media platform X, stating, “Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) restricting Pakistani aircraft from entering Indian airspace has been officially extended until 23rd August 2025. This extension reflects continued strategic considerations and is in line with prevailing security protocols.”

The move comes after Pakistan extended its own ban on Indian flights through its airspace until August 24. According to the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), the restriction will remain effective until 5:19 am (India time) on August 24.

Simultaneously, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up for a large-scale military exercise in Rajasthan from July 23 to 25. A NOTAM has been issued to clear civilian traffic over areas stretching from Barmer to Jodhpur to facilitate the exercise.

The airspace restrictions and military readiness are set against the backdrop of rising hostilities, particularly following “Operation Sindoor,” India’s counteroffensive launched on May 7 after the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians. The assault was carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists and drew widespread condemnation.

During Operation Sindoor, Pakistan reportedly launched multiple drone and missile attacks on Indian border districts, including Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Sri Ganganagar. The upcoming IAF exercise is viewed as a demonstration of India’s preparedness to counter such incursions.

NOTAMs, or Notices to Airmen, are critical advisories issued to ensure civilian aircraft avoid specific airspace during military operations. They are part of a broader strategy to prevent civilian casualties and minimize risks to commercial aviation during heightened military activity.

With both nations maintaining flight restrictions and bolstering their defense postures, the situation remains tense, and further diplomatic or military developments are expected in the coming weeks.
