India Reports First Cases of Human Metapneumovirus, Governments Assure Readiness

New Delhi, Jan 6: Three infants in Karnataka and Gujarat have tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), marking the first reported cases of the virus in India. The Union Health Ministry has assured the public that it is prepared to handle any potential rise in respiratory illnesses linked to the virus.

HMPV, a globally recognized respiratory pathogen, recently gained attention following outbreaks in China. It primarily causes respiratory infections across all age groups, with children being particularly vulnerable.

In Karnataka, two cases were detected through routine surveillance by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). A three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy, both with histories of bronchopneumonia, were diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. Both infants are now recovering.

In Gujarat, a two-month-old boy from Dungarpur, Rajasthan, tested positive after being hospitalized in Ahmedabad with severe respiratory symptoms. Initially requiring ventilator support, the infant’s condition is now stable, according to Bhavin Solanki, a medical officer with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

The Health Ministry clarified that neither of the infants had a history of international travel. It emphasized that HMPV is not new to India and cases associated with it have been reported globally.

Based on data from ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, no unusual surge in influenza-like or severe acute respiratory illnesses has been observed. The ministry highlighted a recent nationwide preparedness drill, confirming India’s readiness to deploy public health interventions swiftly if needed.

State Governments Respond

The Delhi government has directed hospitals to prepare for a potential surge in respiratory illnesses. Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj issued an urgent directive for close monitoring and collaboration with the Union Health Ministry. Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called for swift action to prevent a health crisis.

In Karnataka, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao assured the public that the detected infections are not life-threatening and stem from existing virus strains. He advised following general precautions and stressed that Covid-like protocols are unnecessary at this stage.

Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel emphasized preparedness, detailing measures such as enhanced diagnostic facilities in government hospitals and increased awareness about the virus.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed no HMPV cases in the state and promised a comprehensive advisory soon. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation also reported no cases in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that no HMPV cases had been detected in her state so far.

About HMPV

First identified in 2001, HMPV belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and is closely related to the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). It spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, contaminated surfaces, or direct contact with infected individuals. Symptoms often mimic the common cold but can escalate in vulnerable groups, particularly children.

The Health Ministry continues to monitor HMPV trends and has called for vigilance without panic, underscoring the importance of early detection and timely intervention.
