India Urges Pakistan to Expedite Release of Indian Prisoners and Fishermen

New Delhi, Jan 1: In a renewed diplomatic appeal, India on Wednesday pressed Pakistan to expedite the release and repatriation of 183 Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners languishing in its custody despite having completed their sentences. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the need for immediate action on this humanitarian matter while also seeking consular access for 18 additional individuals believed to be Indian citizens.

This call comes in the wake of the customary biannual exchange of lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen by both countries under a 2008 bilateral agreement. The exchange revealed that 217 Indian or believed-to-be-Indian fishermen and prisoners remain in Pakistani custody, while India holds 381 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen identified as Pakistani or believed-to-be-Pakistani nationals.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the MEA urged Islamabad to confirm the nationalities of 76 Pakistani or believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners in Indian custody to facilitate their repatriation.

“The Government of India has reiterated its commitment to resolving humanitarian issues, including the welfare and release of prisoners and fishermen, through sustained dialogue and bilateral efforts,” the MEA said.

Since 2014, India’s sustained efforts have led to the repatriation of 2,639 Indian fishermen and 71 civilian prisoners from Pakistan. Among them, 478 fishermen and 13 civilian prisoners returned home in the past year alone, underscoring progress amidst ongoing tensions.

India’s appeal also highlighted the plight of missing Indian defense personnel and sought Pakistan’s cooperation in ensuring the safety, security, and expeditious return of all Indian prisoners.

This ongoing exchange underscores the complexities of India-Pakistan relations, with humanitarian issues often caught in the crosshairs of broader geopolitical tensions. Both nations are urged to prioritize the human element in their dialogue, ensuring the dignity and welfare of those affected.
