Indian Army’s Helping Hand Brings New Life to Kathua Boy: From Silence to Speech After Eight Years

Kathua, August 16: In a remote corner of Kathua’s Duggan village, a story of hope has unfolded that reflects the true spirit of the Indian Army—not only as guardians of peace and security but also as compassionate healers who touch lives in the most unexpected ways.

For eight years, Akshay Sharma, a young boy born with a cleft lip and palate, lived in complete silence. Though he underwent surgery at the age of three, he still could not speak. His parents, weighed down by poverty, had nearly abandoned the dream of hearing their child’s voice.

That dream was revived when an Army doctor serving in Duggan came across the boy. Deeply moved by his condition, the officer conducted basic medical check-ups and discovered that with the right therapy, Akshay could learn to talk. But with no speech therapy facilities available in the remote village, the officer decided to take on the challenge himself. He studied speech therapy methods, and in his spare time, began working patiently with the child—teaching him sounds, then words, and eventually small sentences.

Months of dedication bore fruit when Akshay finally broke his silence. The first time he called out to his parents, their eyes filled with tears. For them, it was more than a word—it was a miracle, a moment they had prayed for but never thought possible. Their home, once echoing only with silent prayers, now resonates with their son’s laughter and joyful chatter.

The Indian Army’s helping hand to Akshay has transformed his life forever. This act of kindness also highlights the Army’s larger role in Jammu and Kashmir. By ending terrorism, foiling enemy plots to disrupt peace, and at the same time reaching out to the people with compassion, the Army is winning hearts and bringing smiles to countless faces.

Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, PRO & Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defence, Jammu, said, “This story is a reminder that the Army is not only the defender of the nation’s borders but also a source of hope and care for its people. The bond between the Army and citizens is built not only on security but also on trust, compassion, and humanity.”

In Duggan, Akshay’s voice is now more than just a child’s chatter—it is a symbol of resilience, a testament to the Army’s unwavering dedication, and proof that beyond the battlefield, soldiers are also healers who bring light into people’s lives.
