In a major milestone for connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Railways has successfully conducted a trial run on the 111-kilometer Katra-Banihal railway section. The trial was carried out under the supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), who also conducted the final inspection of the track.
The CRS will now submit a detailed report to the Indian Railways, after which the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) will decide on the inauguration date. The section is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a historic step toward boosting infrastructure in the region.
This crucial section features 27 tunnels and 37 bridges, including the country’s longest rail tunnel, T-49, which stretches an impressive 12.75 kilometers. Once operational, the Katra-Banihal section will enhance connectivity and facilitate seamless travel across the challenging terrain of the region.
