Irfan Pathan Lauds Kashmir’s Youth for Cricket Passion, Calls for Better Infrastructure and Opportunities
SRINAGAR, APRIL 17: Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan on Thursday praised the unmatched passion for cricket among Kashmir’s youth but highlighted the lack of consistent opportunities and infrastructure to help them excel. Speaking at the launch of the EPIC Victory Cricket League (EVCL) in Srinagar, Pathan expressed hope that the new league would serve as a platform to bridge the gap and showcase raw talent.
“I have seen it firsthand – a left-arm pacer from Kupwara, boys from Baramulla… they have fire in them. What’s missing is the exposure and proper training,” Pathan remarked during a press conference at Hotel Radisson.
The EVCL, he explained, would provide much-needed opportunities not just for young players in Jammu and Kashmir, but also for those from other cricketing states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The league, Pathan said, will feature a blend of emerging talent and experienced domestic players, creating an environment of learning and mentorship.
“This is not just a tournament; it will be a platform to change lives,” Pathan added.
The former Indian all-rounder also stressed the importance of improving cricket infrastructure in the region. “Many districts still play on matting wickets. Turf wickets are essential if we want to prepare players for national-level competitions,” he said.
Pathan, who has previously worked closely with cricketers in Kashmir during his time with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), expressed admiration for the rise of female cricketers in the region. “The emergence of female cricketers from Kashmir is inspiring and shows that the youth, regardless of gender, are eager to make their mark,” he said.
