J&K Admin Issues Advisory as IMD Warns of Heavy Rain, Snowfall from Oct 5–7

Srinagar, Oct 4: The Jammu and Kashmir Emergency Relief Organization under the Department of Disaster Management has issued a public advisory following a major weather alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Srinagar.

According to the IMD forecast, an active Western Disturbance is set to affect Jammu and Kashmir from October 4, bringing widespread rain and snowfall between October 5 and 7, with the most intense activity expected from the evening of October 5 till the afternoon of October 7.

The higher reaches of Anantnag, Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg–Zojila, Bandipora–Razdan Pass, Gulmarg, and Kupwara–Sadhna Pass are likely to receive heavy snowfall, while middle-altitude areas may witness light snow. The plains of Kashmir are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, and parts of Jammu Division may see isolated heavy to very heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds gusting up to 60–70 kmph.

Authorities have cautioned that the spell of bad weather may disrupt surface transport, particularly along the Jammu–Srinagar and Srinagar–Leh highways, and could trigger landslides, mudslides, or rockfalls in vulnerable areas. Farmers have been advised to suspend all field operations during this period, while residents have been urged to avoid non-essential travel.

The administration has also warned of a possible rise in water levels in rivers and streams, which may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas. All frontline departments, disaster management teams, and emergency services have been put on high alert to respond swiftly to any situation.

Residents have been asked to stay indoors during heavy rain or snow, keep emergency essentials such as food, water, medicines, and batteries ready, and to follow instructions from local authorities. People living in flood-prone or low-lying areas have been advised to evacuate if directed, and to secure rooftops, loose objects, and livestock.

Citizens are strictly cautioned not to enter flooded rivers or streams, and to stay away from fallen electric wires and landslide-prone zones.

For any emergency assistance, the public can contact helpline number 112 or reach the UT Emergency Operation Centre through landlines 0194-2502254, 0194-2950767, or mobile numbers 7006067453 and 9086131746.

The advisory has been issued by the Chief Executive Officer, Emergency Relief Organization, who also serves as the Nodal Officer, UT Emergency Operation Centre, J&K.
