Srinagar, Oct 23: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Thursday formally announced its support for the National Conference (NC) candidates in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, following detailed discussions and consultations with the party’s central leadership.
Heading the committee, Tariq Hameed Karra said that after two rounds of deliberations since Wednesday, the party has collectively decided to set aside differences with the NC to uphold its principles and the broader interests of the Union territory.
“Taking into account our sensitivities as a suffering state and our identity as a tested voice for a diverse and secular India, the Congress Party has decided to keep all differences with the National Conference on the back burner—solely to reaffirm our commitment to our own ethos and principles,” the statement said.
The party recalled its stance during the 2024 elections, saying, “We chose unity over division, ignoring dissenting voices, to defeat the BJP and free the people of Jammu and Kashmir from a climate of fear and suppression. In keeping with our political culture and moral uprightness, we refuse to act out of expediency.”
Addressing the forthcoming Rajya Sabha polls, the Congress said it hopes the NC “keeps its flock together against all temptations and manipulations” and extended its full support, with all six Congress MLAs expected to vote in favour of NC candidates.
The announcement underscores a united front among regional and national parties in Jammu and Kashmir to counter the BJP’s influence ahead of the crucial Upper House elections.
