Srinagar, Oct 22: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Wednesday decided not to attend the meeting called by the National Conference (NC), with party chief Tariq Hameed Karra stating that the Congress would await instructions from its central leadership before making any decisions on alliance discussions.
Speaking to reporters, Karra said, “Unless there is a clear signal from our central leadership in Delhi, we will not attend any meeting called by the National Conference.”
Earlier, the Congress Legislative Party met in Srinagar to discuss political, administrative, and economic issues ahead of the autumn session of the J&K Assembly, scheduled to begin on Thursday. Karra said the meeting remained incomplete and would resume on Thursday. “The members of the Legislative Party expressed their views, which have been formally sent to our central leadership in Delhi for guidance. We will take our next step only after consulting the high command,” he added.
Emphasising the Congress’s status as a national party, Karra said that decisions at the local level must align with directives from the party’s central leadership. He noted that recent political developments in the Union Territory prompted the party to review its position carefully before participating in any alliance discussions.
“The suggestions and sentiments expressed by our legislators have been shared with the high command. We will move forward only after their guidance,” Karra said. He also asserted that the Congress Legislative Party remains united in its commitment to uphold democratic values and represent the people effectively in the Assembly.
Meanwhile, NC leaders Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah convened the meeting of alliance legislators at the Radisson Hotel, Rajbagh, to chalk out a joint strategy for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections and Assembly session. The absence of Congress highlighted uncertainty within the alliance over seat-sharing and legislative coordination.
The Congress meeting will resume on Thursday after the central leadership in Delhi provides further instructions, Karra confirmed.
