J&K Govt to Allot Five Marlas of Land to Landless Families Affected by Floods

SRINAGAR, Oct 27: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday announced that five marlas of land will be allotted to landless families affected by the recent floods across the Union Territory, with the documentation process already underway.

Responding to a question in the Assembly raised by BJP MLA from Jammu North, Sham Lal Sharma, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that while no new rehabilitation policy has been formulated, the government has initiated steps to provide land to those who lost their homes in the floods.

“Landless people affected by the flood will be given five marlas of land on lease wherever available. The documentary process is on,” Abdullah said on the floor of the House.

The chief minister, however, took a swipe at the opposition, saying his government does not indulge in regional politics. “We are not like the member who divides issues regionally,” he remarked.

Abdullah informed that the Union Government had sent a team to assess the flood damage across Jammu and Kashmir. “The team completed its task, and the Union Home Minister Amit Shah also visited the affected areas. Our own assessment shows that the losses were higher in the Jammu region than in Kashmir,” he said.

He added that a comprehensive report on damages has been prepared and will be sent to the Centre for financial assistance. “Once the funds are released, compensation will be distributed accordingly,” Abdullah assured.
