New Delhi, Feb 9: Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Sunil Sharma, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss critical issues affecting the region, including the rising drug menace, terrorism, and infrastructural development.
During the meeting, Sharma raised alarm over the escalating narcotics trade in J&K, emphasizing the urgent need for stringent measures to combat drug abuse and trafficking. He also pressed for major infrastructure projects, particularly in road connectivity and tourism, to stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities.
On security concerns, Sharma called for strengthening Village Defence Committees (VDCs) and Village Defence Guards (VDGs), underscoring their pivotal role in countering terrorism in rural areas. He cited recent terror attacks, including the brutal assault on an ex-serviceman’s family in Kulgam, and urged the government to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation and education support for victims’ families.
Responding to the concerns, Amit Shah assured full support and pledged decisive action. He also agreed to meet all BJP MLAs from Jammu and Kashmir, a move aimed at reinforcing the party’s presence and addressing lawmakers’ concerns.
The discussion also touched on the upcoming J&K Assembly budget session, political developments, and the overall law and order situation. Sharma’s engagement with the Home Minister marks a significant step in addressing the pressing challenges faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
