Leh, Sept 29: Amid the Leh Apex Body’s continued boycott of talks with the Union Home Ministry, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, today chaired a high-level meeting to review the prevailing law and order situation in the Union Territory.
Present in the meeting were Chief Secretary Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Director General of Police Dr. S.D. Singh Jamwal, Rajesh Kumar, Additional Director General of CRPF, along with senior officers of the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The officers briefed the Hon’ble Lt Governor on the latest developments, preparedness measures, and coordination mechanisms in place to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Taking a detailed assessment of the ground situation following the recent unrest and partial relaxation of restrictions in certain areas, the Lt Governor acknowledged the efforts of all stakeholders. He commended the people of Ladakh for their calm and mature conduct during these challenging times.
“The people of Ladakh have shown remarkable maturity, restraint, and commitment to peace even in challenging circumstances. Their patience and cooperation reflect the true spirit of harmony that defines our region,” the LG stated.
Appreciating the coordinated efforts of the security forces, police, and the civil administration, the Lt Governor urged continued vigilance, sensitivity, and a people-friendly approach. He emphasized that maintaining law and order must be done firmly but with empathy, keeping public welfare and sentiments in mind.
The LG also directed officials to strengthen intelligence gathering, increase community outreach, and ensure prompt redressal of public grievances to deepen trust between the administration and the people.
Calling upon the youth to engage in constructive nation-building, Shri Kavinder Gupta reiterated that the administration is committed to addressing every legitimate concern through democratic dialogue.
“Peace is the cornerstone of development. I urge all sections of society to maintain unity and harmony, and not fall prey to the designs of anti-social or anti-national elements. The administration stands firmly with the people and will ensure their safety, dignity, and progress,” he said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Ladakh’s unique cultural identity and fulfilling the aspirations of its people, stressing that long-term peace and stability would drive sustainable development and opportunity in the region.
The meeting follows violent protests in Leh on September 24, where demonstrators pelted stones at security forces and set fire to multiple vehicles and buildings, including the local BJP office. The unrest led to a forceful security response, resulting in the deaths of four civilians and injuries to 90 people, including 32 security personnel.
In the aftermath, police arrested around 40 individuals, including prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and two local BJP leaders. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with the LG continuing to review security developments to prevent further unrest.
