LG Manoj Sinha Chairs 88th University Council Meeting at University of Jammu

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired the 88th University Council meeting of the University of Jammu at Raj Bhavan, focusing on academic and administrative advancements to enhance the university’s functioning.

Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, Secretary, Planning, Monitoring, and Development Department; Prof. Nilofer Khan, Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University; and Prof. Mohd Mohin, Vice Chancellor, Cluster University Srinagar, participated virtually.

The council granted in-principle approval to several agenda items, including adopting guidelines from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and provisions under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Lieutenant Governor Sinha emphasized the need for regular curriculum updates and the introduction of courses aligned with contemporary trends. He also called for promoting local languages and culture. “The University must prioritize innovation while preserving the region’s cultural heritage,” he stated.

Sinha directed the university to expedite faculty recruitment, address promotions under the Career Advancement Scheme, and streamline administrative processes, including e-office systems. He also urged the timely completion of ongoing infrastructure projects.

The council lauded the university for securing an A++ Grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an outstanding CGPA score of 3.72, making it the only A++ university in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting also reviewed the success of the “Design Your Own Degree” undergraduate program and discussed measures to streamline direct recruitment processes, onboard sports experts for implementing the university’s sports policy, and refine the credit framework for innovative programs.

Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jammu, presented a detailed report highlighting key initiatives in research, skill development, internships, startups, and digital innovations. He underscored the university’s commitment to trans-disciplinary education and environmental sustainability.

The council acknowledged the progress made since the previous meeting and deliberated on further strengthening the university’s academic ecosystem.

The meeting was attended by Sakina Ittoo, Minister for Higher Education; Shantmanu, Additional Chief Secretary of the Higher Education Department; Dr. Mandeep K. Bhandari, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor; Prof. Alok Kumar Rai, Vice Chancellor of Lucknow University; Prof. K.S. Chandrasekhar, Vice Chancellor of Cluster University Jammu; Prof. A.K. Kaul, former Professor at BHU Varanasi; and Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Registrar of Jammu University, among other council members.
