Srinagar, January 8: In a significant crackdown on narcotics smuggling, police in Srinagar arrested two key drug peddlers and seized 8 kilograms of heroin during a checkpoint operation in the Qamarwari area.
According to a police statement, a team from Police Post Qamarwari intercepted a Tata Sumo (registration number JK05D-1837) at Barthana Crossing during routine checks. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed 6 kilograms of heroin concealed beneath the driver’s seat. Additionally, 2 kilograms of heroin were recovered during a personal search of the two occupants, who had hidden the contraband in polythene bags.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Anas Ajaz Awan, son of Ajaz Ahmad Awan, a resident of Dildar Tangdar, Kupwara, and Zahid Ahmad Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Channipora, Tangdar, Kupwara.
The vehicle and the seized narcotics have been taken into custody as evidence. A case has been registered under FIR No. 03/2025 in Police Station Parimpora, invoking sections 8/21 and 29 of the NDPS Act.
Preliminary investigations suggest the heroin was smuggled from Pakistan as part of a larger cross-border drug trafficking network. Authorities are actively pursuing backward and forward linkages to dismantle the syndicate and identify all individuals connected to the illegal operation.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against narcotics, pledging to bring those involved in such criminal activities to justice. In a statement, the police urged the public to support efforts to create a drug-free society by reporting any information about drug trafficking or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or by dialing 112.
“Together, we can safeguard our society from the menace of drugs,” the statement emphasized.
