Manipur, Jan 04: Kangpokpi descended into chaos on Thursday evening as violent clashes erupted between security forces and protestors, leaving Superintendent of Police (SP) Manoj Prabhakar injured. The unrest stemmed from allegations that the SP failed to honor a crucial commitment made to local tribal leaders.
The tension began earlier in the day when SP Prabhakar assured leaders of the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) that central security forces stationed at Saibol would be withdrawn within three hours and replaced by personnel from Kangpokpi Police and local units. However, as the deadline passed without any action, frustration among the protestors boiled over, leading to a volatile standoff.
By 7:00 PM, a large group of protestors marched towards the SP office, demanding accountability. When they attempted to seal the premises, security forces responded with tear gas and blank gunfire to disperse the crowd. In the ensuing confrontation, SP Prabhakar sustained injuries. Several others, including a woman, were also injured, with some reported to be in critical condition.
The clashes have left the region on edge, with protestors refusing to back down and the highway near the SP office remaining a flashpoint for demonstrations. Local leaders have called for calm, urging both sides to de-escalate the situation before it spirals further out of control.
Authorities are closely monitoring the developments, as the possibility of renewed violence looms. The situation highlights the fragility of law and order in the region, underscoring the urgent need for dialogue and resolution.
