Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra Likely to Resume Next Week After Landslide Tragedy in Reasi

Jammu, Sept 7: The Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra, which has remained suspended for the past 13 days following a massive landslide on the Adhkuwari track, is likely to resume next week, officials said on Sunday. The pilgrimage, one of the most sacred religious journeys in India, was halted on August 26 after incessant rains triggered a landslide that claimed 34 lives and left 20 others injured.

When Will Vaishno Devi Yatra Resume?

Officials of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) informed that restoration work is underway on the affected stretch and safety audits are being carried out before allowing devotees back on the track. If weather conditions remain favourable, the pilgrimage is expected to restart early next week, most likely around September 12–13.

Authorities have made it clear that the resumption of the Vaishno Devi yatra will depend on clearance from both the disaster management teams and the weather monitoring agencies.

Details of the August 26 Incident

The tragedy struck on August 26, when a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall along the old track near Adhkuwari in Reasi district swept away pilgrims. At least 34 people died, while 20 sustained injuries in what became the deadliest accident on the shrine route in recent years.

The disaster forced the shrine board to immediately halt the yatra, while rescue teams, NDRF, SDRF, police, and Army personnel rushed to the spot to save lives and provide medical aid.

Weather and Flood Situation in Jammu Region

The prolonged spell of monsoon rains has worsened the situation across Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has remained blocked for six consecutive days due to fresh landslides, while several districts including Jammu, Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar are on alert for possible flash floods and mudslides.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall with thundershowers till September 11, cautioning residents and travelers in hilly areas. Officials said any significant downpour in Reasi could delay the reopening of the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage.

Pilgrims Advised to Wait for Official Announcement

The Shrine Board has urged devotees planning to visit the holy cave shrine to wait for the official announcement regarding the resumption of the pilgrimage. Travelers are also advised to follow weather advisories and avoid taking risks until restoration work on the track is complete.
