NC MP Ruhullah Mehdi Alleges 2018 Election Delay Part of Conspiracy to Abrogate Article 370

Srinagar, Sep 29: National Conference (NC) Lok Sabha member Ruhullah Mehdi on Monday alleged that the delay in holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir in 2018 was part of a “conspiracy” to pave the way for the abrogation of Article 370.

Speaking to reporters in Budgam, Mehdi, who represents Srinagar, said the Constitution mandates elections within six months of the dissolution of the Assembly or whenever a seat falls vacant.

“In 2018, when the Assembly was dissolved, the elections were deliberately delayed. That was illegal and unconstitutional,” he said.

The NC leader claimed that the purpose behind the delay was to ensure there was no elected government in place when the Centre moved to scrap Article 370.

“There was a conspiracy behind that delay so that the Assembly should not exist and Article 370 could be abrogated through the backdoor, by the governor’s signature,” Mehdi alleged.
