Old Security Bunker in Srinagar Dismantled, Reflecting Improved Security Situation

Srinagar, Jan 1: Marking a significant shift in the security landscape of Srinagar, one of the city’s oldest security bunkers has been dismantled, highlighting the improved security situation in the Kashmir valley.

The bunker, constructed by the Border Security Force (BSF) in the early 1990s, was located at Braripora in the Safakadal area. It is now in the process of being removed.

“The CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), which had occupied the bunker and my adjacent property, has vacated the site. The bunker was built in the early 1990s,” said Jayiz Ahmad Alaie, a local resident.

The removal of the bunker has been welcomed by the community. “While many security bunkers were removed from the city in the last decade, this one remained operational. It was probably the largest bunker in the city and took up most of the road,” said Tanveer Ahmad, another local. He added that the bunker often caused traffic jams during peak hours and its removal would ease vehicular movement.

A senior security official stated that the removal and construction of security bunkers is a continuous process, reviewed regularly. “If a bunker is needed, we will construct it. If an existing bunker is no longer necessary, we will remove it,” the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
