Chandigarh, Oct 23: In a major crackdown on transnational narcotics networks, Punjab Police on Thursday said it has busted a cross-border drug smuggling module operating with links to Pakistan, arresting an alleged drug kingpin and seizing over 5 kg of heroin.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the operation, based on specific intelligence inputs, was carried out by the Amritsar Commissionerate Police, leading to the arrest of Rajpal Singh, the key figure behind the network.
“In an intelligence-based operation, Amritsar Commissionerate Police busted a cross-border narcotics smuggling module with links to Pakistan and apprehended drug kingpin Rajpal Singh, recovering 5.025 kg heroin,” DGP Yadav said in a post on X.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused was working in close coordination with a Pakistan-based handler, using routes in the Dera Baba Nanak sector of Gurdaspur district to receive drug consignments smuggled across the border, police officials said.
An FIR has been registered at the Chheharta police station in Amritsar, and further investigation is underway to uncover the full nexus, including backward and forward linkages of the network, the DGP added.
Police sources said the arrest marks another success in Punjab’s continuing fight against narco-terrorism, as several cross-border modules have been detected this year, often involving the use of drones to ferry consignments from Pakistan.
The DGP reaffirmed the force’s commitment to eliminating the drug menace from Punjab, stating that “strong action will continue against anyone involved in smuggling, financing or distributing narcotics.”
