Punjab to Construct 1,156 Anganwadi Centres with ₹138.72 Crore Budget

Chandigarh 09: The Punjab Government has launched an ambitious project to establish 1,156 new Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) across the state, with an allocated budget of ₹138.72 crore. This initiative aims to enhance early childhood care and maternal health services, providing comprehensive support to children and mothers.

The first phase of the project involves constructing 1,000 AWCs, of which 56 are already complete, while 644 are under construction. Work on the remaining 300 centres is in preparatory stages, with construction expected to commence soon. Additionally, 156 new AWCs have been sanctioned and are awaiting panchayat resolutions to begin.

Integrated Infrastructure and Funding

Each AWC will cost an estimated ₹12 lakh, with funding pooled from various sources: ₹8 lakh from MGNREGA, ₹2 lakh from untied funds of the Rural Development Department, and ₹2 lakh from the Department of Social Security, Women & Child Development for furnishings and minor works.

These centres are not just physical structures but hubs for holistic development. They will provide early childhood education, nutrition programs, and maternal health services, creating a nurturing environment for physical, cognitive, and emotional growth.

Project Highlights

  • Sanitation and Water Supply: Over 2,162 new toilets are being built, and 353 centres will receive piped water supply.
  • Furnishings: A total of 21,851 AWCs will be equipped with furniture, creating functional and child-friendly spaces.
  • Saksham AWCs: In aspirational districts like Moga and Ferozepur, 100 centres will feature advanced learning tools, rainwater harvesting systems, and internet connectivity.

Upgrades and Sustainability

The government is also upgrading 350 existing AWCs at a cost of ₹7 crore. These upgrades include better hygiene facilities, RO units, LED lighting, and Poshan Vatikas—kitchen gardens promoting sustainable development. The upgrades are set to be completed by January 31, 2025, while work on Saksham AWCs is scheduled for February 28, 2025.

Sanitation Initiatives

To ensure a hygienic environment, ₹7.78 crore is allocated for toilet construction, and ₹35.30 lakh is set aside for water supply improvements. These efforts will enhance cleanliness and support child and maternal well-being.

Multi-Scheme Support

The project is also supported by central schemes:

  • Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana: 19 AWCs are being constructed with a ₹3.5 crore budget.
  • Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK): 244 AWCs will be developed with an investment of ₹14.40 lakh per unit.

District-Wise Focus

Districts like Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Hoshiarpur are major beneficiaries, with 94, 73, and 73 new centres allocated respectively, ensuring equitable development across Punjab.

Challenges and Commitment

While logistical challenges and delays in panchayat resolutions pose hurdles, the Punjab Government remains steadfast in its goal of completing the project on time. The final deadlines for sanitation and furniture installation are set for March 2025.

This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to improving maternal and child health infrastructure, paving the way for a healthier and more equitable future for Punjab’s communities.
