Satish Sharma Inaugurates Medical Camp at Jammu Railway Station, Hints at Establishing Dormitories, Toilets, and ‘Driver Sarai’ at Major Transport Hubs

JAMMU, Jan 29: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Transport, and IT, Satish Sharma, today inaugurated a medical camp at Railway Station, Jammu, aimed at promoting health awareness and well-being among transport workers.

Organized by the Motor Vehicles Department in collaboration with the Health Department and Taxi Operator Union, Railway Station Jammu, the camp saw participation from over 450 drivers, who underwent blood pressure, blood sugar, and eyesight tests, including screening for color blindness and other vision-related issues.

The Minister was accompanied by DIG JKS Range, Transport Commissioner, SSP Railways, Joint Transport Commissioner, RTO Jammu, CMO Jammu, and other senior officials from the concerned departments.

Minister Urges Road Safety, Health Awareness Among Transport Workers

Addressing the gathering, Satish Sharma lauded the dedication of drivers, acknowledging their demanding schedules while emphasizing the importance of health check-ups and road safety measures. He urged them to wear seat belts, use helmets, and avoid mobile phone use while driving, reinforcing the need for a responsible driving culture.

The Minister stressed that drivers play a crucial role in shaping a responsible society, as their behavior influences young passengers during their formative years. Expressing concern over the rising number of road accident fatalities, he noted that around 1,70,000 lives are lost annually—a figure surpassing casualties from some diseases.

Government Plans Monthly Health Camps, Better Facilities for Drivers

Assuring the transport community of continued support, Sharma announced that monthly health check-up camps will be organized for drivers in collaboration with the Transport and Health Departments. He also hinted at establishing dormitories, toilets, and a “Driver Sarai” at major transport hubs to improve working conditions for drivers and their helpers.

Earlier, Transport Commissioner and DIG emphasized the significance of road safety measures and the urgent need to curb accident rates.

“This initiative reaffirms the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety, ensuring the well-being of transport workers, and fostering a responsible driving culture in Jammu & Kashmir,” the Minister stated.
