JAMMU, Jan 20: Security has been significantly bolstered across Jammu ahead of Republic Day celebrations, with the M A Stadium—the primary venue for the event—declared off-limits to the public as a precautionary measure. The security wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police has assumed control of the stadium, where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will preside over the ceremony and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will serve as the chief guest.
“Ahead of Republic Day, security has been heightened, and the main venue has been secured by the police,” a senior official stated. Sanitization of the stadium and surrounding areas has been completed, with officials restricting access to the public for safety reasons.
Station House Officers and Sub-Divisional Officers have been directed to conduct intensive checks in their jurisdictions and maintain constant vigilance to ensure the celebrations proceed without incident.
The Republic Day function at M A Stadium will see Lieutenant Governor Sinha taking the salute, accompanied by Chief Minister Abdullah. Elsewhere, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Cabinet Ministers Javid Ahmad Dar, Sakina Itto, Satish Sharma, and Javed Rana will preside over similar events in Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag, Kathua, and Udhampur districts, respectively, as per an order by the General Administration Department. In the remaining 14 districts, District Development Council (DDC) chairpersons will lead the functions.
To prevent any untoward incidents, security forces have intensified vehicle and pedestrian checks across the region, especially in border areas. Mobile Vehicle Checkpoints (MVCPs) and ‘nakas’ have been set up at critical intersections and at the city’s entry and exit points.
A multi-agency effort is in place, with personnel from the Army, BSF, CRPF, police, and Village Defence Guards (VDGs) maintaining a high alert. Along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC), patrolling by BSF and Army units has been intensified, and border police units, along with VDGs, have been activated to prevent any infiltration attempts.
These comprehensive measures aim to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for the Republic Day celebrations across Jammu and Kashmir.
