Jammu, Feb 17: Six police personnel, including an assistant sub-inspector, were suspended on Tuesday for alleged dereliction of duty after three inmates — two Pakistani nationals and a local gangster — escaped from a juvenile facility in the R S Pura sector of Jammu district, officials said.
The escape took place around 5:15 pm on Monday when Karajeet Singh alias Gugga, a resident of Dablehar in R S Pura, along with Pakistani nationals Mohammad Suna-ullah and Ahsan Anwar, allegedly attacked on-duty police personnel before fleeing the premises. Two policemen were injured in the incident.
Officials said the suspensions are part of a departmental inquiry initiated to ascertain how the breach occurred, why security was compromised, and whether there were lapses on the part of the deployed personnel.
Special police teams constituted immediately after the escape have conducted raids at dozens of locations as part of an intensified manhunt to track down the absconding inmates.
Police have registered an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant), 262 (escape from lawful custody), 307 (theft with preparation to cause death, hurt or restraint), and 111 (organised crime), along with Sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act for unauthorised possession and use of firearms.
Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti, rushed to the spot soon after the incident. A detailed departmental probe is underway to examine all angles, including a possible conspiracy and the procurement of a country-made pistol allegedly used by the inmates.
A purported video showing the gangster, reportedly linked to the ‘Khauff’ gang, firing a few rounds inside the juvenile home surfaced on social media, triggering public concern.
Former DGP S P Vaid also questioned the incident, pointing out that the three inmates had already ceased to be juveniles. In a post on X, he said one of the inmates had procured a locally made ‘katta’ (crude pistol) and suggested that the trio might attempt to cross the border, expressing confidence that police would apprehend them.
Karajeet Singh was earlier arrested along with nearly a dozen others in connection with the murder of rival gang leader Sumit Jandiyal alias ‘Gataru’ in the Jewel Chowk area in January last year and was subsequently lodged in the juvenile home.
