SRINAGAR, Jan 16: Train services between Banihal in Jammu division and Baramulla in Kashmir Valley were suspended on Thursday due to fresh snowfall on the tracks, officials said.
Railway officials confirmed that services will resume once the tracks are cleared of accumulated snow, ensuring the safety of operations.
Snowfall began across different parts of the Valley early this morning. The weather office predicted clearing conditions by late afternoon, with a partially cloudy sky observed in Jammu. The sun briefly emerged from the clouds in the afternoon, offering some respite.
Looking ahead, the weather office stated that dry conditions are likely to prevail until January 19, with no significant changes expected.
Despite the sub-zero temperatures continuing in the Valley, a nightlong cloud cover caused a slight rise in minimum temperatures, providing marginal relief to residents enduring the harsh winter. The region is currently in the grip of Chillai Kalan—a 40-day period of intense cold that began in December and is set to end on January 30, after which weather conditions are expected to improve.
Meanwhile, tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam have seen a surge in visitors eager to enjoy the snowy landscapes, further underlining the Valley’s winter charm.
