MENDHAR, Oct 2: Minister for Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, on Wednesday stressed the importance of preserving and promoting the rich tribal values that form the core identity of communities in the Pir Panjal region.
Speaking at a vibrant Tribal Mela organized by the Tribal Affairs Department in collaboration with the District Administration at Sagra in Mendhar, Poonch, Rana underscored that tribal development must go hand in hand with cultural preservation. He warned that unchecked modern influences could dilute deep-rooted tribal customs and moral frameworks that are inherently community-driven and inclusive.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, the Minister said the focus is on fostering an inclusive development model that respects tribal traditions while building resilient and self-reliant communities. He lauded the efforts of the Tribal Affairs Department and District Administration for organizing the Mela, describing it as a meaningful step toward ensuring “development with dignity.”
The Mela, attended enthusiastically by locals, celebrated tribal life, customs, and heritage. Traditional tribal cuisine offered a taste of the region’s culinary diversity, while exhibits of local medicinal plants highlighted the enduring relevance of indigenous knowledge in rural healthcare.
A free medical camp was also set up to provide health consultations and services to the public. The event reflected the government’s resolve to implement development policies rooted in the lived realities of tribal societies while reinforcing the importance of cultural continuity.
Chairperson District Development Council Poonch Tazeem Akhtar, Deputy Commissioner Poonch Ashok Kumar Sharma, senior officials, and a large gathering of locals attended the event.
